Advances like these are improving patient care but steadily obviating "bread and butter" pathology. This emphasizes the need for pathology to vigilantly protect cutting edge methods like genetics and proteomics as its purview.

Pathology's title as Chief Expert in ex-vivo diagnostics is *de facto*. With medicine rapidly evolving, it would be unwise for pathologists to presume no one will rise to contend for that title.
